SUBSTANCE: Aldactone (Spironolactone)

Aldactone (spironolactone) is used as a diuretic (potassium-sparing diuretic) to help the body get rid of excess sodium and water, while reducing potassium losses. The drug can be prescribed in the treatment of hypertension and edema in patients suffering from congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, and also low potassium in the blood (hypokalemia). The drug is often referred to as aldosterone receptor antagonists, and is also used to treat a disease known as hyperaldosteronism.

Sometimes Aldactone (spironolactone) is taken by patients in the treatment of unwanted hair growth (hirsutism), acne and seborrhea. People who change sex from male to female also take this drug as part of hormone replacement therapy. There is an opinion that the drug helps in the treatment of alopecia.

Side effects

Aldactone (spironolactone) may cause the following side effects:

• menstrual disorders;
• erectile dysfunction;
• lowering the tone of voice;
• compaction or breast enlargement;
• pain or abdominal cramping.

Serious side effects are less common. Contact your doctor immediately if you find yourself in a fever, loss of appetite, weakness, bruising or bleeding, vomiting or bloody stools, decreased urination, or any other serious side effects.
